White Castle

Sightseeing attraction | Abergavenny | Wales | United Kingdom

White Castle, known in Welsh as Castell Gwyn, is an impressive castle ruin near the village of Llantilio Crossenny in Monmouthshire, Wales. It is part of a group of fortifications known as the "Three Castles," along with Grosmont and Skenfrith, and was originally built by the Normans after the conquest of England in 1066 to secure the route from Wales to Hereford.

Originally constructed as a timber-earth structure, the castle was rebuilt and expanded several times over the centuries. In the 13th century, it was given its current name, possibly due to the white plaster on its walls. The castle consists of a large outer bailey, roughly the size of a football field, and a pear-shaped inner bailey surrounded by a deep, water-filled moat.

Many of the features of the castle today are attributed to Lord Edward, who took control of the Three Castles in 1254. The modifications to White Castle are seen as precursors to the powerful fortresses he later built in North Wales.

Today, White Castle is the best-preserved and most impressive of the Three Castles, offering visitors a fascinating insight into medieval military architecture and the history of the region.

FREE TO GET IN Quite a large castle and 900 odd years old. Outer walled courtyard with an inner moated and walled keep. The moat is VERY deep and still partially filled with water Stunning views, nice bit of history to read about, 1 castle of 3 built to defend that part of Wales, we just happened to be that way and as it was only 15 mins further down the road decided to take a look. Definitely worth visiting if you’re nearby, but don’t recommend travelling miles to go see it as it’s just literally the castle, there is a small gift shop or a better description would be a gift kiosk, but it wasn’t open when we went ( summer only perhaps?) Seems to be a frequent place to visit for the local dog walkers some of which forget to take their dog poo bags 😒 however thats a minor annoyance. If you have 1-2 hours spare definitely worth a visit

A plain castle. Long narrow roads to access the site, virtually no parking.

The roads in and out of White Castle were single track. Be cautious. The trip was well worth it! The castle is surprisingly held together very well over the ages. The walls are beautiful and the grounds are maintained well.

Very quiet location, down a narrow country lane with passing places. Limited parking. Lovely walk on the Offa's Dyke path and along the River Trothy.

We did Grosmont, Skenfrith and White Castle back to back today. Think White was our favourite. Pretty easy to find, couple of narrow lanes but nothing terrible. Limited parking. Not a lot of information boards but loads of space for picnics, running around, etc. Can whizz round it in 20mins, we spent about an hour chilling here.

A lovely little historical site. There's a CADW donation box for entry (recommended donation is £3). There's a couple of picnic benches to have a picnic. There's a small car park area outside. Dogs are welcome but to be kept on the lead.
